Psychosomatic illnesses

One thing about working in a medical Practise is that now and then some clients with specific medical problems - which the doctors cannot find any known cause for in the body, and where medicine has no or little effect – are referred to me.

Psychosomatic illnesses are caused by mental and emotional stresses that manifest as physical diseases without biological causes.

Some examples: A lady with chronic and painful bladder infection, someone else with severe constipation for more than 5 years, a healthy young sportsman with chronic lower back pain and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and a lastly a woman who became lame overnight. And there are many more.

These types of illnesses are referred to as psychosomatic illnesses. It has to do with the influence that the mind has over physical processes — including the manifestations of physical disabilities that are based on intellectual infirmities, rather than actual injuries or physical limitations.

My grandmother who is now 95 years old and as happy and healthy as can be will say: “It is all in the mind”. How correct she is, I only realized since I became an NLP Practitioner, although it is not as simple as this.

Sigmund Freud pursued a deep interest in psychosomatic illnesses following his correspondence with Georg Groddeck who was, at the time, researching the possibility of treating physical disorders through psychological processes

Psychosomatic illnesses are not faked illnesses, but patients often require treatment for the underlying psychological root. Unfortunately, many people suffering from psychosomatic illnesses resist psychological counselling as a form of treatment, believing this discounts the disease. Though these illnesses respond to drugs, painkillers and other medical help, symptoms are likely to return unless the underlying cause is addressed.

In the examples I have given in the beginning of this article, the root psychological problems which we had to clear from the Unconscious mind were the following.

a. Lady with bladder infection: Deep seated guilt feelings about sexuality. The church she belonged to condemned a big range of sexual practises and as she was engaging in these; she developed very deep guilt which manifested as chronic bladder infection.

b. The person with constipation went back to a time when a remark was made his mother: “You are so lucky not to have constipation like us. You have no idea how painful it is!” As he always had feelings of not being part of the family and had a desperate wish to belong and feel part of them, his unconscious mind developed it (constipation) overnight. A few days later he had to be taken to hospital for medical treatment and since that time had to be on laxatives.

c. The woman who suddenly couldn’t walk, had deep seated feelings of anger and resentment to her husband for having to cook and clean every night and one night actually ha d a thought: “I wish I was in a wheel chair that I can be looked after”. The next morning she could not walk.

Working with the underlying emotional feelings and causes; and reprogramming and reprocessing the patterns and beliefs in the unconscious mind, cleared the symptoms.

It can be as simple as that, although the person must have a desire to become healthy again and be willing to go to the root causes.

To learn more about the fascinating power of the unconscious mind, feel free to book as coaching session or attend one of our courses.
